Trenton Thunder Rained Out TwiceRecord June New Jersey Rainfall Suspends Game
The people of Trenton got plenty of thunder, and quite a bit of lightning too...but not via their baseball team.
So much for April being New Jersey's rainiest month. A downpour that likely secured June 2009's record precipitation brought a one hour, fifty-three minute delay upon the Reading Phillies and Trenton Thunder Friday night. When things finally got underway, Trenton hurler Zach McAllister retired the side of Phillies in the top of the first inning. The Thunder jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in their half of the frame. Leadoff man Austin Krum doubled. Second baseman Reegie Corona grounded out to shortstop. Krum later stole third base, and was driven home by Eduardo Nunez's sacrifice RBI that he hit to second. When Reading came up in the second, Trenton recorded another three quick outs, but that was all anyone wrote. The Phillies came onto the field as though the bottom of the inning were going to take place, but umpires and ground crews ordered the tarp back on the field, for the second and final rain delay. The turn of events angered Reading pitcher Joe Savery, who flailed his arms in disgust at the decision, and ended up throwing a ball into the stands. Entertainment Besides BaseballThe crowd of over 4,000 was in and out of their seats for much of the night, trying to stay dry amid the isolated showers. "Why has the rain not stopped? " asked spectator Tamara Lorimer. "This is ridiculous, we were here the last time the team was rained out and I'm so sick of it. It's June. It should be sunny!" "This was my first game so far this season," claims fan Sal Deficcio. "I avoided most of the games in recent weeks because of the rain...and now finally I choose to come to one with my family and this happens." Fans had some other entertainment to keep them from getting bored. Many enjoyed the sharp lightning bolts that appeared before their eyes, as well as the Thunder's lightning bolt mascot. He and the team's bird mascot spun a round, remote-controlled flying gismo and sent it into the air. Children also got to see everything from contests, to pets, to mascot dances while the tarp crew was in action. On a somber note, scores of Michael Jackson songs played throughout the night as well. Game Resumption This game will pick up right where it left off, Saturday June 27th at 5:05pm. When it resumes the teams will be entering the bottom of the second inning. Outfielder Noah Hall will come to the plate, and the game will be played until nine innings are complete. Saturday's regularly scheduled game, initially slated to start at 7:05pm, will get underway shortly after the completion of the game being resumed. The Thunder also host Reading on Sunday and Monday.
